We resumed regular practices , albeit with a start time that is thirty minutes earlier than usual. At first I decided to protest the new 6:00 AM start time by not attending practice. However, I soon found out that avoiding the workouts has a detrimental effect on speed and endurance.

Glad to hear the new start time is sticking. I'm sure our employers will be glad as well.
I managed to paddle with a group here in Melbourne, I was able to hang for the steady state stuff but couldn't accelerate whatsoever on the pickups. I'd like to blame the loaner equipment, but I'm sure I'm to blame. It was great - when I told them I was in Australia for Dragon Boat racing and was hoping to go out for a paddle while I was in Melbourne they tried to let me down easy and were like "ah, yeah, Dragon Boat....well, mmmm...we paddle sprint kayaks here" - with all the doubt I would have had if someone had showed up at WCC for a sprint workout with a dragon boat background.
Australia is quite nice and could make for some good winter paddling grounds.
Keep up the good work and make me pay for all this vacationing when I return.
